Mission Creation Tutorial

    Chapter 1

    The plot

The mission will be exactly as good as the story it is embedded into. dESPair is in big parts about imagination - dESPair missions are almost pure imagination...

Let me explain this through the first Hektor SAR mission, during our Denmark-Norway trip. Sir Capt. Skybuster planned the flight from Esbjerg to Thyboron. He wrote a flight plan and prepared the scenery.

Then, we decided that we will have a SAR mission happening during the next leg. We could have done this by sending a message saying: When you reach Thyboron, fly 305° and after approx. 20nm look out for a ship object. If you find it, then you have succeeded".

But we decided to embed the mission in a story. dESPair was contacted by SOLA rescue center in Norway for assistance in an ongoing SAR mission for a sinking boat near Thyboron. The wrecked ship was able to send an emergency signal, which was relied over Inmarsat to SOLA rescue center. Our pilots should receive the call for the SAR mission shortly before approach maneuvers for Thyboron aquaport starts. And we wanted to have the weather worsening during the whole flight to create some time pressure, and make the pilot decide weather he has enough fuel and nerves left for the mission - or if he better prepares for a secure landing...

There's room for improvement. The ship could have been transporting highly confidential and extremely important diplomatic documents, making it nescessary to land near the ship and get a board... use your imagination!

Would it change the mission feeling, if a human life depends on the success? Or the well-being of our company? Imagine, the success of the mission dictates if dESPair is sold to Laminar Research or not. Does this change the atmosphere? We'd say yes...

So, take a good share of the project time to develop a mission plot. This part is like role games...

Read our aircraft's stories in the public hangar, and you will see what imagination can achieve.
